Dolls

Dolls has puppeteering as its main theme, specifically the kind of puppeteering done in Bunraku doll theater. Each section of the movie starts with a story told by the puppets and their masters that relates to what the live characters are doing. The most important of these stories is about Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and Sawako (Miho Kanno), a young couple who are about to break up because Matsumoto's parents want him to get married to his boss's daughter. At first, he agrees, so the unstable Sawako is sent to a mental hospital. When he leaves his bride at the altar to save Sawako, he realizes that she can't take care of herself and needs to be tied to him with a red rope. The two can't be separated, so they go on a journey through Japan. Along the way, they meet other people who, like them, have put love aside for fame, power, or money.
