The night of the 24th of August, 1944. General von Choltitz, governor of Grand Paris, is prepared to blow up Paris on Hitler's orders. The general, who comes from a long family of Prussian military officers, has never wavered when it came to following orders. General von Choltitz's secret stairway at the Hôtel Meurice is on Swedish consul Raoul Nordling's mind. The Seine bridges and Paris' principal landmarks (Louvre, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower) are mined with explosives and ready to go. The consul, armed with all diplomatic weapons at his disposal, will attempt to persuade the general not to carry out Hitler's demolition order.
