In a New Hampshire motel managed by their mother (Cathy Moriarty), precocious Harriet (Evan Rachel Wood) lives with her elder sister, Gwen (Mary Stuart Masterson), and dreams of a better future for herself and her family. During Ricky's (Kevin Bacon) stay at the motel, Harriet discovers that he is unlike anybody else she has ever met: nice and interesting. After a tragedy, Harriet and Ricky become even more devoted to each other.
