In the late 1940s, Easy Rawlins is a black World War II veteran who is out of work and has few job prospects. Easy meets a mysterious white man named DeWitt Albright in a bar. Albright is looking for someone to look into the disappearance of a white woman named Daphne Monet, who he thinks is hiding out in one of the city's black jazz clubs. Easy takes the job because he needs money and has to pay rent. However, he soon finds himself in over his head.
