Agnes is slowly dying from cancer, but her sisters are so upset about their own problems that they can't help her. Maria feels terrible about the fact that her husband killed himself after finding out about her extramarital affair. Karin, who is suicidal and hates herself, seems to find her sister disgusting. Anna, the very religious maid who lost her young child, is the only one who seems to be able to comfort and understand Agnes.
