George McCray,13, is living with his grandparents on their farm in Kansas while he comes to terms with the fact that his father died in a tractor accident a few weeks ago. Amidst the pain that comes with losing a loved one, Jill has relocated to Minnesota and George misses her. However, they will be reunited for the holidays. As he helps his thankful grandfather Bo with everyday duties and consoles his grandmother Cora, George finds a sense of belonging on the farm. In addition, Mary Ann and Tucker, the smart and friendly dog the McCrays take in when his troubled owner Frank Thorne goes to prison, have become close friends with him as well.
