A small child named Nikolas lost his family in an accident hundreds of years ago in Lapland. The townspeople resolve to take turns caring for the orphaned kid. Nikolas moves to a new house once a year, around Christmas. Nikolas chooses to build toys for the children of the households as farewell gifts to demonstrate his gratitude. Nikolas' old adoptive families multiply over time, and on Christmas morning, practically every house had gifts on its doorstep. Nikolas is assigned to live and work with Iisakki, a grumpy old carpenter who prevents Nikolas from continuing to make Christmas presents at the age of thirteen. Nikolas gradually earns Iisakki's trust, however. Together, they begin to look after Nikolas' Christmas ritual. When the elderly Iisakki is forced to leave Nikolas and relocate, the Christmas gift tradition is jeopardized once more. Thankfully, Nikolas devises a remedy that continues to provide joy to children every Christmas, even now.
