Almost 13 years after she ran away from home to join her boyfriend, DeeDee returns with her 11-year-old son, Trooper, to her hometown. Sam, her childhood closest friend, is now married, and he and his wife, Lydia, work as veterinarians in the town where she grew up. Lydia is a little skeptical about DeeDee after Sam tells her that they were childhood best friends and that DeeDee was his first crush when they were younger. DeeDee and Trooper, on the other hand, manage to win the hearts of many residents of the town with their charming helpfulness and companionship. DeeDee establishes a candle-making company in the town square and invites many of the ladies of the town to monthly candle-making parties, where she and Lydia become fast friends as a result of their shared passion for candles. DeeDee tells Sam one evening after dinner with Lydia and Sam that she is very unwell and that she does not have much time to live. She asks for his assistance in finding a decent family in town to adopt Trooper, which he gladly does. Sam subsequently tells Lydia all that happened, and the two of them decide to adopt Trooper if and when something happens to DeeDee.
