There are times when Jack Thornton can't make the stake he needs to get out of town to the Alaskan gold fields by winning enough hands. For the sake of his own safety and the safety of an Englishman who was also traveling to the Yukon, he pays $250 for Buck, an Englishman's dog that is half-wolf.
