Convict Robert Stroud faces life in solitary confinement after killing a prison officer. Stroud's life is given new meaning when he finds a defenseless young sparrow in the exercise yard and nurses it back to health. Despite his lack of formal education, Stroud becomes a renowned ornithologist and finds more freedom and purpose inside prison than most people find outside.
