It is based on the renowned series of nationally broadcast debates that took place in 1968 between two outstanding public intellectuals, leftist Gore Vidal and conservative William F. Buckley Jr. This series of vitriolic and explosive encounters, originally intended as commentary on the issues of the day, came to define the contemporary era of public discourse in the media, marking the big bang moment in our contemporary media landscape when spectacle trumped content and argument took the place of substantive discussion. It explores the entwined biographies of these two great philosophers, and it revels in the vocabulary and theatricality of their debates, posing the question: "What has television done to the way we talk politics in our democratic society today?"
