a fictional West African country's civil war as seen through the eyes of a little child named Agu Accompanied by soldiers, Agu's trek is depicted. It's easy to see why Agu fears his commander and so many other soldiers around him, but when he first sees his homeland ravaged by war, it's hard not to be fascinated by the horrors he's seen. Agu as a child soldier is depicted in a nuanced and difficult light, and the author does not shy away from raw, visceral description.
