Bang the Drum Slowly

The story of a pro baseball team from New York and two of its players is told. Unlike Henry Wiggen, who is the team's great pitcher, Bruce Pearson is a regular, every-day catcher who is far from being the team's star player but is a buddy to all of his teammates nonetheless. Bruce finds that he is terminally ill during the off-season, and Henry, his sole genuine friend, vows to be the one person who will be there for him during his final season with the club. While dealing with Bruce's imminent illness throughout the season, Henry and his teammates strive to make Bruce's final season as a member of the team a memorable experience.
