Elaine and Ed Kendall have a lot of pain and grief. Their Staten Island home used to be a place where young people were in love, but now it's hard for them to find a sense of stability in their lives there. During the war, their eldest son is physically and psychologically ill. His younger brother takes it upon himself to bring him peace and relief from the pain.
