Sir Robert Chiltern is a well-off government minister with a lovely wife. All of this is jeopardized when Mrs Cheveley arrives in London with devastating evidence of a previous transgression. Sir Robert seeks assistance from his friend Lord Goring, an ostensibly idle philanderer and the source of his father's misery.
