American Dreams in China

Trio of college students united by the American ideal in the 1980s. A hillbilly who defies his fate as a farmer; a self-assured cynic; and an idealistic romantic poet are these three characters. Xiaojun is the first to get a US student visa. Yang follows but chooses to stay in China for her. Dongqing is regularly refused by the US Embassy. Stumped, he obtains a job teaching English at a university but is sacked for private tutoring. After failing to find respectable work across the Pacific, Xiaojun becomes a waiter at a diner.
