All the Mornings of the World

It is the late 1700s. The viola da gamba player Monsieur de Sainte Colombe returns home to discover that his wife has passed away while his absence. In his sadness, he constructs a modest cottage in his yard, into which he moves to devote his life to music and his two young daughters, Madeleine and Toinette, while ignoring the outer world. Mr. de Sainte Colombe declines to join Louis XIV's court orchestra under Lully, despite the fact that he is the subject of extensive rumors regarding his musical talent. One day, a young man named Marin Marais visits him with a request: he wishes to learn how to play the violin.
