Nova Prime has become humanity's new home, a thousand years after terrible events drove civilization to flee Earth. General Cypher Raige returns home to his estranged family after a long tour of service, eager to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. Cypher and Kitai crash-land on a strange and perilous Earth after their craft is damaged by an asteroid storm. Kitai must journey across dangerous terrain to retrieve their rescue beacon, while his father lies dying in the cockpit. Kitai had aspired to be a soldier like his father his entire life.
