Abraham Lincoln

The first talkie from silent film legend D.W. Griffith serves as a companion piece to his masterpiece BIRTH OF A NATION, presenting a thorough biographical portrait of the 16th president. We witness his childhood in a log cabin, the heartbreaking death of his first love, Ann Rutledge (Una Merkel), his disputes with Douglas, his acceptance of the presidency, the Civil War's horrible toll, and eventually his fatal assassination at Ford's Theater. The framing of the numerous vignettes has the sensation of historical images come to life, and Griffith pays close attention to period detail as always. Walter Huston is fantastic in the title part, evolving slowly from laconic rogue to honorable elder statesman. This is a fascinating, worthwhile video in and of itself, as well as an intriguing historical document.
