With the help of an unfinished letter written by her recently deceased father, little Momo relocates with her mother from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo to the secluded Japanese island of Shio, where she grows up. On arrival, she continues to explore her new environment, meeting and learning about the habits and routines of the local youngsters. She eventually leaves the group. In the meantime, various weird things occur around the island, which had previously been peaceful. Suddenly, orchards are being pillaged, valuable trinkets are disappearing from shops, and the worst of all, Momo begins to hear weird mumblings coming from the attic of their house every morning after her mother leaves for work. Momo is enraged by these strange occurrences and her mother's refusal to believe her, so she embarks on a strange and supernatural journey to find the source of the trouble, which leads her to a trio of troublesome imps: the flatulent lizard Kawa, the childlike Mame, and their hulking ogre leader Iwa. During her vacation to the island, Momo learns that her father's strange letter is somehow tied to her visit.
