Operation Market Garden, a failed attempt by the allies to end the war fast by seizing three bridges in Holland and allowing access across the Rhine into Germany, is depicted in A Bridge Too Far. Poor allied information and two German Panzer divisions destroyed the final part of this operation (the Arnhem bridge over the Rhine, the 'bridge too far').
