Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram hosted the debut episode of Total Wipeout on January3, 2009. There are 20 candidates each week competing for a prize of £10,000 in a variety of challenges. Vast pools of water or mud are used as the setting for these challenges, which often require participants to traverse large assault courses. Unlike the BBC version of Wipeout, Total Wipeout is a licensed version of the Endemol show that first aired in the United States in2008, with the name slightly changed to avoid confusion. The BBC announced on March 29th,2012, that the show Total Wipeout would be cancelled after its sixth season. An official from the BBC told the Daily Mirror: "After four very successful seasons of Total Wipeout and one season of Winter Wipeout, the BBC has taken the decision to broadcast the next season, set to transmit later this year." In the summer of2012, BBC One broadcast the final ten episodes of Series5, bringing an end to the show's four-year run on the network.
