Produced by Silvergate Media for the BBC channel Cbeebies, The Octonauts is a children's television show that originates in the United Kingdom. Brown Bag Films is responsible for the series' animation, which takes place in Ireland, however British voice actors are used. The American and Canadian authors Vicki Wong and Michael C. Murphy of Meomi Design Inc. are responsible for the children's books that serve as the inspiration for the television series. An underwater exploring crew composed of stylized anthropomorphic animals serves as the focus of The Octonauts. This group of eight explorers resides in an underwater base known as the Octopod, from which they launch a variety of expeditions into the depths of the ocean with the assistance of a variety of water-based vehicles. The subject matter brings to mind Star Trek and Thunderbirds, with a dash of Jacques Cousteau thrown in for good measure. In spite of the fact that it is a work of science fiction in terms of its technological aspects, the crew comes across a variety of strange creatures and settings that are actually real marine animals in their natural habitats.
