Set in New York City in the year1900, 'The Knick' focuses on the Knickerbocker Hospital and its innovative surgeons, nurses, and staff, who push the boundaries of medicine during an era of astoundingly high mortality rates and no antibiotics. John Thackery is a great surgeon who is a pioneer in his field, despite his secret cocaine addiction. He oversees a group of physicians that includes his protégé Dr. Everett Gallinger, the young Dr. Bertie Chickering Jr., and the promising surgeon Dr. Algernon Edwards, who was lately foisted upon him. Cornelia Robertson, the daughter of the hospital's benefactor, Captain August Robertson; Tom Cleary, a surly ambulance driver; Lucy Elkins, a country nurse with a fresh face; Herman Barrow, a crooked hospital administrator; and Sister Harriet, an outspoken nun, are also members of the hospital's colorful cast of characters.
