The Hathaways is a 26-episode situation comedy that aired on ABC from October6, 1961 to March30,1962, featuring Peggy Cass and Jack Weston as the "parents" of three performing chimps. Walter Hathaway, a real estate agent, is portrayed by Weston. Cass is his wife Elinore, the "mother" of the Marquis Chimps Candy, Charlie, and Enoch, and their booking agent. In1960, the monkeys had previously been on The Ed Sullivan Show and in numerous commercials. Character actress Mary Grace Canfield played Mrs. Amanda Allison, a housekeeper; Barbara Perry portrayed Elinore's friend and neighbor, Thelma Brockwood; and Harvey Lembeck as Jerry Roper, the theatrical agent for the chimpanzees. Mrs. Harrison, another neighbor, was portrayed by Belle Montrose, the mother of comedian Steve Allen. "Love Thy Neighbor" is the title of the pilot episode, in which the Brockwoods decide to buy the house next door despite their worries about having chimpanzees as neighbors. Joe Flynn had a guest appearance as Freddie Winkler in the third episode of "Walter Takes a Partner," which aired on October 20. In "Candy's Tonsils," Vaughn Taylor played Dr. Dorsey, a veterinarian. Barney Holt was portrayed by Robert Q. Lewis in "TV or Not TV" on. Other episodes included "The Hathaways Sleep Out," "Grandma's Lamp," "TV or Not TV," "The Practical Joker," "Help Wanted," "The Shrewd Trader," "A Man for Amanda," and "Elinore's Best Friend," the series finale.
