The Cowboys was a Western television series that lasted for only a few seasons. It was based on the film of the same name, which John Wayne starred in and was released in 1972. Between the dates of February 6 and May8,1974, it was shown on the television network owned and operated by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Jim Davis, Diana Douglas, Moses Gunn, A Martinez, Robert Carradine, and Clay O'Brien were some of the actors who appeared on the television show. David Dortort, who is best known for producing Bonanza and The High Chaparral, was the show's producer. In the same vein as the movie, the television show recounted the escapades of seven boys who worked on a ranch in the 1870s in the state of New Mexico. The Cowboys was originally planned as an hour-long series, but ABC ultimately chose to cut the running duration down to a format consisting of only half an hour. The switch to a different format did not result in an increase in the number of people watching the show, which led to its premature demise. Cal Bellini appeared as Wa-Cha-Ka in "The Indian Givers," Kevin Hagen played Josh Redding in "Death on a Fast Horse," and Lurene Tuttle played Grandma Jesse in "Many a Good Horse Died." All three of these roles were played by guest stars.
