From December29, 2008 through July13,2010, MTV aired The City, an American reality television series. The two seasons of the series, which was developed as a spin-off of The Hills, focused on the personal and professional lives of a group of young women in New York City. Executive producer Liz Gateley and Adam DiVello came up with the concept. Whitney Port, who appeared in its predecessor, was the original subject of the series as she started working for Diane von Furstenberg. Olivia Palermo, Port's boyfriend Jay Lyon, his roommate Adam Senn, and her friend Erin Lucas were also mentioned. Two of Port's roommates and Palermo's nemesis were brought in to replace the latter three for the second part of season one. The City was less well-received by reviewers and less popular than The Hills when it was released. Many viewers complained about how much of its storyline appeared to be staged and how much of its characters' backstories were fabricated in the same way they were in the previous season. All of the seasons of the show have been released on DVD.
