The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a 1980 Japanese anime television series directed by Hiroshi Saitô. It is based on Mark Twain's famous and popular classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The series was initially titled "Tom Sawyer no Bken" and aired on World Masterpiece Theater, an animation fixture on Fuji TV that annually presented an animated adaptation of a different classic book or story from Western literature. It was the second episode of the series to showcase the work of an American author, following 1977's Rascal the Raccoon. This series was also dubbed into English by Saban International and broadcast on HBO in 1988 as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." It alternated with the later WMT adaptation of "Little Women" during the 7:30AM time slot. Celebrity Home Entertainment distributed "All New Adventures of Tom Sawyer" videos in the United States. In January2011, the anime began showing on NHK's cable station TV Japan in the United States.
