Vernon Brownmule, also known as "Burnin' Vernon," is a scandal-ridden, washed-up, one-hit-wonder who was driven out of country music, only to emerge 20 years later as the second finest Elvis impersonator around. During his drunken bender, he drove his car into the sign of an old country church. As a result, he was jailed and given a sentence that required him to return to the church and work there as a handyman as part of his probation. Along the way, he acts as though he is the new minister at the church and gets back in touch with a woman he had a one-night stand with in the past after discovering that he has a daughter who is 15 years old but he has never met her.
