Monsters is a horror anthology series that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel from 1988 to 1991. As of2011, Monsters airs in intermittent weekday marathons on Chiller, NBC Universal's horror and suspense-themed cable channel. Monsters shared the same producer as Tales from the Darkside and succeeded it in certain ways. Nonetheless, there were distinctions. In contrast to Tales, which occasionally featured science fiction and fantasy tales, this series was primarily horror. As the title suggests, each episode of Monsters focused on a unique monster, ranging from a mechanical puppet from a fictional children's television show to mutant, armed lab rodents. Similarly to Tales, the stories in Monsters were rarely conventional action storylines and frequently featured an ironic twist in which a character's arrogance or avarice led to horrific consequences. Adding to this was a sense of humor that is typically absent from horror productions, which in some situations may have served to lighten the mood of the audience, but in most cases contributed to the production's overall dread.
