Maude

Maude is an American television sitcom that was originally shown on the CBS network from September 12, 1972 until April 22, 1978. Bea Arthur portrays Maude Findlay, an outspoken, middle-aged, politically liberal woman who lives in suburban Tuckahoe, Westchester County, New York with her fourth husband, domestic appliance company owner Walter Findlay. Maude championed the ideals of women's liberation, consistently supported legal abortion, and pushed for civil rights, racial equality, and gender equality. However, her sometimes-dominant and sometimes-overbearing demeanor frequently landed her in difficulty when she spoke up on these topics. The program was a spin-off of All in the Family, on which Edith Bunker's cousin Maude was first portrayed by Beatrice Arthur. Like All in the Family, Maude was a sitcom with topical plots written by producer Norman Lear. Unusually for an American sitcom, a number of episodes featured simply Maude and Walter in what amounted to half-hour "two-hander" teleplays. In "The Analyst" from the fourth season, Bea Arthur delivered a lengthy, introspective monologue to an unseen psychotherapist.
