Masters of Science Fiction is an American television anthology series that was created by the same people who were responsible for creating Masters of Horror. On August4,2007, at 10 o'clock in the evening, the first episode of the show was broadcast on ABC. It was supposed to air in six parts at the beginning, but for reasons that have not been made public, two of the episodes were cut from the original plan. The show follows a style that is very similar to that of Masters of Horror, with each hour-long episode taking the form of a separate short film adaptation of a story written by a well-known member of the science fiction community; this is where the moniker "Masters" comes from. The show was signed up for broadcast on Space in Canada in December of 2007. This made it possible for the two episodes that had been missing to finally air in North America. On August5,2008, a DVD including all six episodes was made available for Region 1. Beginning on February12,2012, the episodes were broadcast for the first time in the United States on the Science Channel under the title "Stephen Hawking's Sci-Fi Masters." The episode "Watchbirds" was the first episode to be broadcast in this manner. Stephen Hawking, who is not seen on film, serves as the show's off-screen host.
