Forgotten Worlds is a History Channel documentary series that explores numerous "lost" sites from antiquity to the present. These "huge engineering, technological, and cultural achievements" are shown through the use of archaeological data, interviews with relevant specialists, and CGI reproductions. These visual reconstructions consist of simulated 3D environments and photo-manipulated overlays, allowing the "lost world" to be viewed over its current state. On April 4, 2005, the pilot episode "Palenque: Metropolis of the Maya" originally aired. It was followed by 12 additional episodes in 2006 and 19 more in 2007.
