L'ispettore Coliandro is a series of tongue-in-cheek Italian television films directed by Marco Manetti and Antonio Manetti, written by the crime writer Carlo Lucarelli, and starring Giampaolo Morelli as Inspector Coliandro. Coliandro, according to the performers and filmmakers, is an Italian crime television series aimed towards "young viewers." In all likelihood, this is true. In Italian fiction and television programs such as Il commissario Montalbano, the police officers are heroic law enforcers who save the day on a regular basis. Inspector Coliandro saves the day as well, but through a combination of "good fortune and [his younger partner's] intuition." This partner is the only one who sees him how he sees himself: a hero worthy of the protagonists in American police dramas. The humor of the series is derived from the disparity between how Coliandro views himself and how the rest of the world views him. Coliandro's name is a play on the Italian word coglione, which properly means "ball" but is commonly used to mean "asshole"; therefore, he must constantly rectify the pronunciation of his name.
