Lawman is an American western television series that was first shown on ABC from 1958 until 1962. John Russell portrayed Marshal Dan Troop, while Peter Brown played Deputy Marshal Johnny McKay in the show. The events in the series took place between the years 1879 and 1880 in the city of Laramie, in the state of Wyoming. Cheyenne, which starred Clint Walker and debuted in 1955, was the first of numerous western television shows produced by Warner Bros. and already airing at the time. Maverick, starring James Garner and Jack Kelly, Colt.45, starring Wayde Preston, and Sugarfoot, starring Will Hutchins were all produced by the company in 1957, carrying on the tradition that had been established the year before. After one year, Warner Bros. added Lawman and Bronco with Ty Hardin to their roster of stars. Prior to the beginning of production, Russell and Brown, together with the show's producer Jules Schermer, struck a covenant to ensure that the series would continue to be of a high enough caliber that it would not be dismissed as "just another western." Peggie Castle was cast in the role of Lily Merrill, proprietor of the Birdcage Saloon and Dan's potential love interest, at the beginning of the second season, joining already established cast members Russell and Brown.
