Rough Collie Lassie and her human and canine pals are the stars of the popular American television show Lassie. Developed by producer Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax, the show ran from September 12, 1954, through March 24, 1973. On CBS for seventeen seasons before moving to syndication for the final two, the show was one of the longest-running television series. The show went from black-and-white to color in 1965, after being shot in black-and-white at first. The first ten seasons of the show revolve around Lassie's escapades in a rural farming village. Jeff Miller, his mother, and his grandfather are Lassie's first human friends, until Timmy Martin and his adoptive parents take over in the fourth season. When Lassie's agricultural exploits come to an end in the eleventh season, she seeks new adventures in the wilderness with a succession of US Forest Service Rangers. For her final two seasons on television, Lassie eventually finds a home in a children's home after a year on the road without a human lead to guide her. Two Emmy Awards were given to Lassie in its first two years of existence. Jan Clayton and June Lockhart were both nominated for Emmys for their roles as stars. Toys and apparel were also made throughout the show's run as memorabilia. The show's longtime sponsor, Campbell's Soup, offered two freebies and distributed thousands to spectators. The feature film Lassie's Great Adventure was released in August of 1963 after a multi-part episode was put together and recut. Steve McCullough, played by Jon Provost, returned to television screens in 1989 as part of The New Lassie. DVD releases of a few episodes have been made available.
