Seven years after her daughter Josefine vanished into the woods near a lake, detective inspector Eva Thörnblad returns to Silver Height. She is presumed to have drowned because the body has never been recovered. Thörnblad is now investigating the abduction of a young boy to see whether there is any connection to the disappearance of her daughter. Johan Thörnblad, the famous entrepreneur who developed an empire of lumber and timber processing on the enormous forest owned by his ancestors, will also be looked after by his daughter. Each episode begins with a kidnapping, but as the story progresses, it takes on a sinister and stranger tone.
