Yasuhiro Nightow created the video game Gungrave, which was adapted into an anime series in Japan. Yousuke Kuroda wrote the screenplay for the series, which is directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru and produced by Madhouse Studios. It follows Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell as they advance in ranks within the Millennion crime syndicate. A total of twenty-six episodes of Gungrave broadcast on TV Tokyo between October6, 2003 and March29, 2004. Tsuneo Imahori, who provided the music for the Gungrave video game and its sequel, Gungrave: Overdose, is also responsible for the series' opening theme. The North American rights to Gungrave were granted to Geneon Entertainment, formerly Pioneer Entertainment, in 2003. It was revealed on July 3rd,2008, that Geneon and Funimation had reached an arrangement for the distribution of certain titles in North America after Geneon halted distribution of its own titles in October 2007. However, Funimation Entertainment will have exclusive rights to the production, marketing, sales and distribution of some titles while Geneon Entertainment retains the license. On December30,2008, Gungrave was announced as one among the several games included in the agreement. The anime series has been licensed by Funimation since November26, 2010. On May 11th,2011, the Funimation Channel brought the anime series back to the United States.
