During the 1972–1973 television season, CTV aired the Swiss–Canadian television series George on Thursday evenings. The series ran from 1972–1973. The film George! from 1971 served as the inspiration for the television series, which followed the exploits of a St. Bernard dog and the man who owned him while they lived in Switzerland. Both the feature film and the subsequent half-hour series featured Marshall Thompson in starring roles. On September 16, 1972, the first episode of the series aired on CTV during the Thursday evening time slot. On the other hand, George was cancelled after only one season in 1973. Blaik Kirby of The Globe and Mail referred to the program as "abysmal" in his review. The series was rebroadcast on CTV affiliates for years afterwards, typically to fill Saturday morning schedules, despite the fact that it only had a limited run and received mixed reviews from critics.
