Dexter's Laboratory is an animated science fiction comedy sitcom for children developed by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network. The series focuses on Dexter, a child prodigy with a secret laboratory packed with his assortment of creations. His sister Dee Dee always obtains entry despite his best efforts to keep her out, and his archrival and neighbor, Mandark, are continuous adversaries. The first two seasons of the series have two additional segments: Dial M for Monkey, about Dexter's lab monkey-turned-superhero, and The Justice Friends, about three superheroes who share an apartment. Tartakovsky initially submitted the series to Hanna-animated Barbera's shorts showcase World Premiere Toons, basing it on the student films he produced at California Institute of the Arts. In 1995 and1996, Cartoon Network made and aired four shorts before viewer approval rates prompted the network to schedule a 13-episode first season, which debuted on April28, 1996. Tartakovsky departed the series in 1999 after 52 episodes and a television feature had been made to begin work on Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars. In2001, the network resurrected the series with a new production crew at Cartoon Network Studios; after 26 more episodes, the series concluded on November20, 2003.
