Custer, also known as The Legend of Custer, is a 17-episode military-western television series that aired on ABC from September 6 to December27,1967, and starred Wayne Maunder as Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. During the American Civil War, Custer had become the youngest major general in the Union Army. In1866, he was reinstated as lieutenant colonel in charge of the Seventh Cavalry stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, despite having been demoted to captain amid post-war army reductions. Numerous members of the regiment were destitute, ex-Confederates, or even criminals. The series was canceled before the screenplay chronology would have reached the Little Big Horn River in southeastern Montana, where everyone perished on June25, 1876. Custer's commanding commander, U.S. General Alfred H. Terry, portrayed by Robert F. Simon, disapproved of Custer's long hair and most of his strategy for killing Indians.
