Brass

Brass is a British comedy-drama series produced by Granada Television for ITV, and then Channel 4. Brass was a comedy satirizing working-class historical dramas of the 1970s and American supersoaps such as Dallas and Dynasty. It was mostly set in Utterley, a fictional Lancashire mining town in the 1930s. Unusually for ITV comedies of the day, there was no laughter track, and the humor was purposefully maintained extremely dry, employing complex wordplay and subtle criticism on popular culture. Brass is the northern English slang term for both "money" and "arrogance." The series also heartily ridiculed the 1977 Granada TV adaptation of Dickens' Hard Times with Timothy West. The John Stevenson and Julian Roach-created sitcom centered on two fighting families: the rich Hardacres and the working-class Fairchilds, who rented a small terraced house from the Hardacre dynasty. The Hardacre family was led by the cruel self-made billionaire Bradley, who championed Thatcherite rhetoric while devising many ludicrous plans to make his enterprises more efficient so he could fire employees, and his alcoholic aristocratic wife Lady Patience. The head of the Fairchilds was the stern "Red" Agnes, who propagated militant socialist language throughout the Hardacre mine, mill, and munitions industry, and her dopey, forelock-pulling husband George, who is ruled by his wife and his boss. Agnes was also Bradley Hardacre's mistress, which is a twist.
