High school in Medora, Wisconsin, is a nightmare for Justin Tolchuk, a 16-year-old who is both sensitive and lanky. When Franny, his well-meaning mother, enrolls in the school's international exchange student program, she envisions a fit, smart Nordic adolescent who will instantly make her outsider son feel at home and accepted. When the Tolchuks' exchange student, Raja Musharaff, arrives, he turns out to be a 16-year-old Muslim from Pakistan. A lot of things are going to happen in this year for everyone in the Medora community.
