A Different World was a six-season NBC sitcom that aired in the United States. It is a spin-off series from The Cosby Show that originally focused on Denise Huxtable and the students of Hillman College, a fictional mixed but historically black college in Virginia. Following Bonet's departure in the first season, the series centered on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert and math whiz Dwayne Wayne for the rest of the run. Members of the big historically black fraternities and sororities were regularly shown in the series. While A Different World was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, it usually tackled subjects that The Cosby Show writers ignored. One of the earliest American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic was one that aired in 1990.
