The American television series 21 Jump Street is a police procedural crime drama that ran from April 12, 1987, all the way through April 27, 1991, for a total of 103 episodes and was shown on the Fox Network as well as in first run syndication in the United States. The series follows a group of young-appearing undercover police detectives as they investigate crimes committed in high schools, colleges, and other venues frequented by teenagers. It was supposed to be called Jump Street Chapel, after the deconsecrated church building in which the unit has its headquarters, but Fox asked for the name to be altered so that viewers would not be led to believe that it was a religious program. The series was conceived of by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell, and it was produced by Patrick Hasburgh Productions, Stephen J. Cannell Productions, and 20th Century Fox Television in cooperation with both of those production companies. Hasburgh, Cannell, Steve Beers, and Bill Nuss all served as executive producers for the show. The show, which debuted on the Fox Network while it was still in its infancy and quickly became popular, was aimed specifically at a younger demographic. The final season was broadcast in first-run syndication, primarily on the stations that are affiliated with the Fox network. After that, it was shown again on the FX cable network during the years 1996 and 1998. Johnny Depp's fledgling acting career was given a boost by the series, which led to him receiving widespread exposure on a national level as a teen idol. This position was frustrating for Depp, but he was required to continue working on the series under his contract and was compensated $45,000 every episode. In the end, his contract was terminated after the fourth season for no apparent reason. A spin-off series based on the character of Dennis Booker was created and aired under the title Booker. The show lasted for one season, from September 1989 to June 1990. On March 16, 2012, a dramatization of the story was released in theaters, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
