Matt Mills, a paraplegic prison convict, meets "The Board" of Satoshi-Telefair Industries in the not-too-distant future, who express gratitude for his participation in the Program. Mills agrees to volunteer under duress, with the promise of being made to walk again. He is injected with a synthetic nanomaterial and suffocates, only to awaken with his legs restored, alone in a steel cell in the first spoke of an experimental contraption called The Wheel. Mills' body is wounded and his mind is tortured by a series of assaults, yet the synthetic nanomaterial not only heals but also re-engineers his strength. Mills is determined to survive the experiment-and to find his daughter before The Board does.
