Leland Fitzgerald is a reclusive young man who is imprisoned for the murder of a mentally disabled boy who also happened to be the brother of his girlfriend, Becky. Fitzgerald is a withdrawn young man who is imprisoned for the murder of a mentally disabled boy who also happened to be the brother of his girlfriend. A jail teacher, Pearl Madison, chooses to write about Leland's case while the rest of the town is still reeling from the tragedy. Other people who were impacted by the tragedy, such as Becky and her sister, Julie, are dealing with their own issues at the same time.
