Engineer Jake Holman gets on the gunboat U.S.S. San Pablo, which is sent to patrol a tributary of the Yangtze in the middle of China in 1926, when the country is being exploited and in the middle of a revolution. His disrespect for tradition and cynicism soon clash with the ship's "rice-bowl" system and the uneasy relationship between Chinese and foreigners on the river.
