The global economy had crashed by2017, and American society had devolved into a totalitarian police state that censored all forms of cultural expression. The government pacifies the public by airing a number of game shows in which convicted criminals fight for their lives, including the gladiator-style The Running Man, hosted by the ruthless Damon Killian, in which "runners" attempt to evade "stalkers" and certain death in exchange for a chance to be pardoned and set free.
