What is the difference between reality and fiction? When he runs out of ideas for his novel, Lewis Fielding writes a screenplay about a woman discovering herself when his wife Elizabeth returns from Baden Baden. She didn't quite find herself there, although she did have a brief meeting with a German who claimed to be a poet in an elevator. Now that the German has arrived in England, he is welcomed to tea and claims to be a fan of Fielding's works. What is his favorite? "Tom Jones," says the author chevalier. The novelist incorporates the German into the plot, amused at being confused with the other Fielding.
